Why Continued Education for Hair Stylists is So Important

The beauty industry is a dynamic and constantly evolving industry that requires continuous education to stay significant and competitive.

When a hairstylist invests in continued education, it can provide clients with the latest trends, techniques and products. When it comes to continued education, there are many opportunities. There are also many paths a stylist can go down. I have thought about my many years behind the chair and have compiled a few for our readers to plunge into.

Current trends and techniques are at the top of my list. The world of hair fashion is forever changing. I think that most stylists would agree that new trends and techniques are always right around the corner. When we, as stylists, invest in our own education it can help us to become better equipped to provide our clients with the latest techniques and achieve the latest trends. When stylists complete continued education in a new trend, it not only benefits their clients or future clients but it can help stylists maintain their competitive edge in the industry.

Explode a hairstylist’s client list by expanding skills and services offered. I always say a “well rounded” stylist can truly service anyone. For example, hairstylists who specialize in Balayage services may take a course in a multiple method based hair extension certification course. This will not only offer further services on their current clientele but also open the door to new clients. We have seen this time and time again, stylists take it upon themselves to invest in their education and within a year can double their income. Majority of the time stylists can gain the money back from a course in one (1) to three (3) clients.

The beauty of a hairstylists “network”. Continuing education courses provide hairstylists with an opportunity to network and build relationships with other industry professionals. You never know who you will meet or what opportunities can be provided to a stylists. Networking can be one of your most powerful tools as a hairstylist. This can lead to new job opportunities, collaborations and mentorship prospects. Some of these opportunities can skyrocket a hairstylists career and help place them exactly where they want to go within the industry.

There are many different avenues a hairstylist can go down to attend continued education classes and certification courses. To start would be Industry Conferences and Trade Shows as they are a great avenue for hairstylists to learn about the latest classes offered and certification courses. Hairstylist trade shows often feature free workshops and demonstrations from some of the top hairstylists within the industry. This type of event can also provide wonderful networking opportunities to hairstylists to build their professional community.

Online education and certification programs have also taken the industry by storm. The popularity of these courses has been very helpful to stylists in recent years. These courses offer a convenient and flexible way for hairstylists to learn and develop their skills. Many of these online programs and certifications offer self-paced learning which allows hairstylists to complete courses at their own pace. These programs can also be very budget friendly and allow hairstylist to complete many at one time.

Regarding salon education programs for their stylists, these programs are often tailored to the needs of the salon. This can include training on new products, techniques and services. In-house education programs provide hairstylists with an opportunity to learn and develop their skills while remaining in their current job. Often times a salon will offer assistant programs for new stylists to gain confidence in their skills and better help prepare them to be behind the chair.

Manufacturer education programs can be a great tool for stylists. Often times these education classes can come free of charge to a stylist who is either buying into the line or already a current user. The educators that are contracted by these brands are extremely knowledgeable, can better help the hairstylist gain confidence in using the product and can be a direct contact for the stylists. The programs put in place are often designed to teach hairstylists about the company’s products, as well as new techniques and trends. Manufacturer education programs can be an excellent way for hairstylists to learn about new products, trends, and techniques while also building relationships with the company.

Continuing education can be an essential part of a hairstylist’s success with trends, techniques and behind the chair confidence. These programs allow stylists to stay competitive and relevant within the industry. They can also expand their skill set while expanding their service menu. Opportunities to network with other industry professionals are also a major perk when it comes to continued education. There are many avenues available for hairstylists to pursue continuing education, including industry trade shows, online education, salon education programs and manufacturer education programs. By taking advantage of these opportunities stylists can explore a larger client base and potentially increase their yearly income. We at Christian Michael offer both online and in person hair extension certification classes. We believe that knowledge is power in this industry and strive to help each hairstylist achieve confidence and knowledge to bring them to the next level in their career.
